Standard 1: Credentials

A DHHS-P applicant must:

  • Have graduated from at least a Master’s level program in deaf education or a related field (e.g., linguistics, speech-language pathology, audiology, special education)

  • Currently have their required applicable professional license(s) and/or certification(s)

  • Be at least 5 years post-graduation

  • Have at least 3 years (or the equivalent) of full-time direct clinical practice experience with DHH children or adults

  • Demonstrate fluency in English, as evidenced by either graduating from an English-speaking academic program or documentation of TOEFL, if not a native English speaker

  • Demonstrate fluency in ASL, as evidenced by either an American Sign Language Proficiency Interview (ASLPI) score of 3 or greater, a Sign Language Proficiency Interview: American Sign Language (SLPI:ASL) score of advanced or higher, an Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment (EIPA) score of 3.5 or higher, a National Interpreter Certification (NIC), or Board for Evaluation of Interpreters (BEI) advanced or master, if not a native ASL speaker

    A DHHS-PA applicant must:

  • Have graduated from the Deaf Language Associate (DLA) program at The College of New Jersey

  • Be at least 1 year post-graduation

  • Have at least 1 year of full-time direct clinical practice experience with DHH children or adults

  • Demonstrate fluency in English, as evidenced by either graduating from an English-speaking academic program or documentation of TOEFL, if not a native English speaker

  • Demonstrate fluency in ASL, as evidenced by a score of 3 or greater on the American Sign Language Proficiency Interview (ASLPI), if not a native ASL speaker

    A DHHS-A applicant must:

  • Have graduated from a doctoral program (e.g., PhD, EdD, SLPD AuD, PsyD, or equivalent)

  • Be at least 1 year post-graduation

  • Have at least 3 years full-time research and/or teaching experience related to DHH children or adults

  • Demonstrate fluency in English, as evidenced by either graduating from an English-speaking academic program or documentation of TOEFL, if not a native English speaker

  • Demonstrate fluency in ASL, as evidenced by either an American Sign Language Proficiency Interview (ASLPI) score of 3 or greater, a Sign Language Proficiency Interview: American Sign Language (SLPI:ASL) score of advanced or higher, an Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment (EIPA) score of 3.5 or higher, a National Interpreter Certification (NIC), or Board for Evaluation of Interpreters (BEI) advanced or master, if not a native ASL speaker
